Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked with modern gilt spine with raised bands, with gilt lettering, spine faded, boards rubbed. Pritzel 3700 for part one. The clergyman Stephen Hales (1677-1761) laid in part one of Statical Essays (1727) the foundations of plant physiology by his experiments on the movements of sap (Hunt catalogue part II, p. xlvi).
