Washington, thick quarto (11.5 by 8 inches by 3 inches), [U.S. Geological Survey, 16th Annual Report, Part I, p. 133-414, with 84 plates and 66 text figures.] ***CONTENT: O.C. Marsh (1831-1899) and E.D. Cope were the preeminent American vertebrate paleontologists of the nineteenth century, famous for their discoveries of dinosaurs in North America and ignoble for their bitter rivalry. This massive treatise is one of Marsh’s most significant works, summarizing his decades of study of the skeletal anatomy, relationships and classification of dinosaurs. Described in detail are familiar forms: Brontosaurus, Stegosaurus, Ceratosaurus, and Triceratops, as well as a host of other genera from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The anatomical descriptions are accompanied by splendid text engravings and full-page skeletal reconstructions. The entire volume (with 910 p., 117 plates and pocket map) is here present, including reports by H.F. Reid on Glacier Bay [AK] and its glaciers; the Green Mountains [NY] by T.N. Dale; Cretaceous floras by L.F. Ward; Precambrian geology by C.R. Van Hise; and the Director’s report by C.D. Walcott. ***CONDITION: This is a clean, near Fine copy in the original textured brown cloth, with a gilt vignette on the front cover and the original gilt-lettered backstrip with crossed pick and hammer decoration. The covers are bright and very well preserved, with only minor edgewear; the backstrip is near pristine, with bright, bold lettering. Joints and hinges strong, binding firm. The text pages and illustrations are immaculate: very fresh, clean and bright. ***PROVENANCE: This copy is from the Museum of Comparative Zoology Library of Harvard College, with their contemporary bookplate (and later deaccession stamp) on the front pastedown and checkout slip on the rear pastedown. No other ownership markings. This is a most handsome, fully complete copy of a heavy volume rarely found in good condition. Nickles 713. Extra postage will apply.
